Why I Burn Palo Santo
I was drawn to palo santo first for the smell. But over time, it became more than just fragrance… it became a reset button. Lighting it is how I mark a shift in my day. It tells my mind and body: this moment is different, this space is clear, I’m ready to begin again.
Rituals don’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s the smallest acts — like lighting a stick of wood — that create the biggest sense of presence.
What Palo Santo Is
Palo santo, or “holy wood,” has been used in spiritual traditions across South America for cleansing and energy work. When burned, the wood releases a sweet, grounding smoke. I use it as a way to shift energy and create intention in whatever space I’m in.
Want to go deeper? I talk about how rituals like palo santo connect to my creative process in my Hack the System blog post.
How I Use It in My Daily Life
Before writing: I light it and wave the smoke over my notebook to clear mental clutter.
Before recording or creating: It helps me settle into the mood I want.
At the end of the day: Burning palo santo is how I close the chapter on what’s behind me so I can rest.
You can also listen to how I weave these kinds of rituals into my creative life through music. My song Hack the System is streaming now on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.
How to Burn Palo Santo Safely
Light the tip of the stick for about 15 seconds, then blow it out.
Let the smoke rise as the wood smolders.
Move it slowly through your space, or around yourself, with intention.
Always use a fireproof bowl or shell, and never leave it unattended.
Keep a window slightly open for airflow.
Why It Matters
For me, burning palo santo is not about superstition. It’s about presence. It’s about telling myself and my environment: this space is sacred now. Whether I’m writing, recording, or winding down for the night, that small ritual shifts how I move through it.
Closing Thought
You don’t need a full ceremony to change your energy. A single breath, a stick of palo santo, and an intention can make the ordinary feel sacred.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column]
